Cherished with Natalie Smith

From time to time, we will be asking various people we admire to share one of their most cherished possessions and to tell us why that item means so much to them.

We asked New Zealand's Natalie Smith to share something that's special to her. We discovered Natalie through a collaboration she did with fashion label Thursday Sunday (we interviewed the girls from Thursday Sunday over here). She also curates the beautiful blog Magic Surrounds.

'My dear friend Alexi is a painter, and I bought this piece at her show at the Melanie Roger Gallery in Auckland late last year. It holds significance for me as it’s the first painting I’ve ever bought myself, a ritual I’d like to adhere to each year. It’s also a very beautiful work – I love the interplay of light and shade, the softness of the tones, the subtleties – it speaks to me of a particularly tumultuous few months of my life. It’s even more special given that the artist is a cherished friend. I’ve hung it above my bed, and the poem that Alexi wrote out for me to have sits in my box of special cards and notebooks.'
